Upgrading to Hario Switch immersion dripper
In my previous coffee post, I wrote about dialing in filter coffee using a simple glass cone dripper with my KinGrinder K7.
In June 2026, I decided to upgrade my coffee gear and bought the official Hario Switch.
It is easily one of the most useful coffee gadgets I have used. By adding a simple silicone base with a ball valve to a classic V60 glass cone, it lets you switch between percolation (free flow) and full immersion (steeping).
A cool practical hack:
The silicone Switch base is modular. You can take out the glass cone and swap it with other compatible glass drippers, including my previous 01 glass cone. This means you can use different cone sizes on the same valve base without buying separate brewers.
My favorite hybrid recipe (200 ml single cup):
- Dose: 12 g of coffee (1:16.7 ratio)
- Grind: 90-95 clicks on K7
- Water: 200 g at ~93C
Brewing steps:
- 0:00 (Percolation) - Open the valve. Add coffee, pour 50 g water for blooming, wait until 0:40.
- 0:40 - Pour another 50 g water (100 g total) with valve still open.
- 1:10 (Immersion) - Close the valve switch. Pour remaining water up to 200 g.
- 1:10 to 2:00 - Let the coffee steep in the closed cone.
- 2:00 - Press the switch to open the valve and let the coffee drain into your cup.
This hybrid method combines the bright clarity of a standard V60 with the sweet, rich body of immersion brewing.
